About Jerry Ensminger
Jerry Ensminger is a retired Marine Master Sergeant. His daughter Janey was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1983 while living at the military base in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. After a 2 year battle Janey succumbed to her illness in 1985 at the young age of 9. After years of struggling to find answers as to why his beautiful little girl was taken so prematurely, it wasn’t until 1997 Jerry finally got a glimmer of hope. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry released a report on Camp Lejeune and the chemicals which had been found in the base’s drinking water with a link to childhood cancer, primarily Leukemia. Janey had been conceived, carried and born at Camp Lejeune. This rekindled Jerry’s motivation to fight for the truth and justice. He learned of dozens of male breast cancer cases from marines stationed at Camp Lejeune as well as other serious health issues. In 2012 national legislation was passed entitled the Janey Ensminger Act, which extended care to members of the military and their families exposed to toxic water. But his fight didn’t end there, Jerry was instrumental in getting the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 (CLJA) signed into law. CLJA creates a new way for veterans and civilians to file claims against the US Government for harm caused by being exposed to the toxic water at Camp Lejeune. Also signed into law the same day was the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act which expands VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances. Jerry now presents across the country to groups informing them of CLJA and the PACT Act and ensuring those exposed to the toxic water at Camp Lejeune get the help and support they deserve.
